As societies face the dual challenge of an ageing population and a shortage of care professionals, Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies have attracted growing attention. AAL systems offer a range of functions, including monitoring daily activities, detecting emergencies such as falls, and tracking physiological parameters. Their overarching aim is to support independent living, improve the quality of life of older adults, and reduce reliance on formal care services.
Despite their potential, user acceptance of AAL technologies remains limited. Privacy and data security concerns are among the primary barriers to adoption. These concerns often arise from fears of surveillance, loss of control over personal data, intrusiveness, and the invasion of personal space. Such issues are particularly pronounced in home environments, where individuals typically expect a high level of privacy.
Privacy perceptions are shaped by a range of factors, including contextual, individual and psychosocial influences, perceived need, and social norms. Consequently, designing AAL systems that foster acceptance, and sustained use requires more than technical robustness alone; it demands a user-centred approach that meaningfully addresses these concerns.
This special session aims to bring together interdisciplinary contributions that explore design, evaluation, and deployment strategies for privacy-aware and personalised AAL solutions. By addressing acceptance-related challenges, the session seeks to advance the effective integration of AAL technologies into home environments to support personalised healthcare.
